INTRODUCTION: TEMENGGONG FOOD HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2026
ART EXHIBITION
How does food become heritage? What makes a dish representative of a culture?
In 2020, Hawker Culture in Singapore became the country’s first element inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The global recognition of Singaporean culture also invites us to consider how heritage resides in the meanings and practices of the everyday.
Heritage connects past and present, yet food heritage is often less a matter of origin than of shared practice. It resides not only in recipes, but in the spaces where food is produced, consumed, and shared, such as hawker centres, coffee shops, markets, and homes. Memories of taste and smell anchor senses of self and sustain social relationships. A dish may be closely identified with a particular community while carrying histories that extend far beyond it, shaped by migration, trade, and colonial encounters.
Tracing food heritage through the works of artists across generations and geographies reveals these layered histories and uncovers how meaning is continually negotiated and redefined.
